The parade typically attracts more than 700,000 in person viewers and an estimated 37 million television viewers, according to data released by the Tournament of Roses. More than 100 years later, the parade continues to have massive appeal. This is when the first lots were built in Torrance and seven years before the city was incorporated. In fact, Torrance’s first-ever float was created as a real estate promotion by the Campbell Company in 1914, Robinson said. ![]() In addition to bringing the community together, the float also brings Torrance national attention. Ruth Pinchaent, who attends West High School, won the design competition with her babbling brook float that shows larger than life caterpillars transforming into magnificent monarch butterflies. The theme of Torrance’s float is “For the Love of Nature,” and per tradition the design was produced by a local student. This year the city contributed $125,000 to the float and the association holds fundraisers to cover the difference.
